Safe & Smart City
Sun, surfing, and cool beats – the SCS Multiplex CityWave with its surfing wave and lifestyle platform delivers maximum fun factor in Vienna. Beginners and professionals alike go here to find perfect surfing conditions in the middle of Austria, and in the evening, they can chill with electronic music and delicious drinks. For over four years already, CityWave Austria has relied on Dallmeier video systems “Made in Germany” to guarantee the safety of its guests and maximise the learning success of the surfers.

Beginners, advanced surfers, professionals and groups can book a surf session at the Multiplex CityWave – a so-called standing wave with a width of 7,5 meters.
When the team from the operating company, AWSM GmbH, brought the “CityWave” format to Austria in 2016, the CityWave platform was initially established in Vienna's inner city. But to gain better access to transport connections and avoid the expensive task of mothballing the platform over the winter months, in 2017 CityWave moved to its current location right next door to Shopping City Süd (SCS), one of the largest shopping centres in Europe.
“Today we have the advantages of maximum security and learning success for the surfers thanks to pinpoint sharp, 4K quality images.”

Video security – but with extra benefits please
“In 2016, our début year in the inner city of Vienna, we unfortunately experienced two incidents of vandalism and break-in crimes, so we were looking for an efficient video security solution for our new site close to the SCS. The reflection from the water and artificial lighting during the evenings meant that the solution must also be able to handle difficult light conditions.” says Lucas Prodinger, Managing Director of AWSM GmbH. “And since we were going to install a video solution anyway: Why shouldn't our surfers also reap some reward? So, we struck on this idea of being able to provide them with recordings of their private surfing lessons so they could analyse them at home and improve even faster.”
Video analysis “to go”
After the Regensburg-based video equipment manufacture Dallmeier received the order, the video solution was implemented by project manager Gerald Schön of Dallmeier Austria. Having originally installed four Dallmeier dome cameras and one fisheye camera with full HD resolution to cover the platform and the surf wave together, today CityWave is using camera models with 4K resolution.
A particularly practical advantage for the surfers: Thanks to the Dallmeier video system, they can even improve their surfing technique and capture memories of their private surfing sessions. If they want to, they can request the recording of their surf session from CityWave and simply bring the video home with them on a USB flash drive.
Unobtrusive video security “Made in Germany”: A Dallmeier dome camera (top left in the picture) captures the activity on the CityWave platform.
A storm is coming – is that true?
Another important feature is the ability to confirm warnings of inclement weather. If the CityWave operators receive a message from the Austrian Meteorological Service, they can simply open the Dallmeier mobile app “DMVC”, where they have access to the live images from the cameras – they don't have to be present at the site. With these images, they can then assess whether it is necessary to pack furniture such sunshades and loungers away, perhaps even close the platform temporarily, to avoid exposing guests to unnecessary hazards.
“Who damaged the surfboard?”
The Dallmeier video system recently delivered proof of its value once again when a hired surfboard was returned to CityWave in a damaged condition after a surfing session. Following a brief investigation, the video recordings showed clearly and unequivocally that the damage was caused during the surfing session. Instead of having to bear costs totalling several hundred euros themselves to repair or replace the surfboard, it was then clear that there could no longer be any discussion about the cause.
Proximity to the manufacturer, and fast response times
Lucas Prodinger sums up: “In Dallmeier, we have found a partner which offers us not only leading-edge technology but also first-class support. We have updated the video security system regularly, and it was even possible to reposition the cameras without difficulty when we built a roof over some of the platform. Today we have the advantages of maximum security and learning success for the surfers thanks to pinpoint sharp, 4K quality images. We also appreciate the fact that the manufacturer is close and the rapid response times by Dallmeier Austria, and we are looking forward to many more years of successful cooperation.”
